Regardless of whether you are vacationing a hundred miles from home or on the other side of the globe, part of a peacful vacation is just making sure that the kids-and the parents too- are comfortable. For a child, vacation is both exciting and a little frightening. The food, the people, the language, and even the toilets are different sometimes, and providing a little consistency is very reassuring.
Wherever you go in Asia, you will find family entertainment in abundance. Taking a ride on the back of an elephant in northern Thailand, or seeing the giant pandas in the Wolong Giant Panda Reserve in China are just two of many options for safe and exciting nature trips. And just like in the US, you'll find amusement parks and theme parks in most major Asian cities for a good afternoon's distraction.
You can have a memorable vacation and pretend that you're Indiana Jones, while still keeping the little ones safe and secure at all times. It's always a good idea to check the State Department web site before traveling to see if there are any warnings, but you will find that Asian cities are no more dangerous than American or European cities-and in many cases, much safer. Take the same standard precautions that you would traveling anywhere. Beware of pickpockets, and keep your wallet in your front pocket instead of your back pocket. Lock your passports in the hotel safe and just carry photocopies of them with you. Keep your kids in sight at all times.
Your children may have a little culture shock, so be prepared to answer their questions. It may be shocking for example, for a child to witness desperate poverty in places like Cambodia or rural India. They may see limbless men, or even other children begging for scraps. They may for the first time in their young lives encounter religions and belief systems that are different from your own. Some of the customs will be unfamiliar and may seem strange. It's natural for your children to wonder about these things, so be ready to address their concerns.
As it is with any vacation, a trip to Asia requires some planning and preparation, and small things can make a big difference in making that family trip a big success. Much of that planning is very basic and simple, and just helps make everything go smoothly. Here are a few examples:
