You can certainly spend a small fortune on a vacation, regardless of where you go. But Asia boasts many exciting destinations for the budget-minded. Wander away from the main tourist spots and you'll find large communities of American and European backpackers, paying the equivalent of five to ten dollars a night for a basic room. The amenities are limited. You'll get a bed and a shared bathroom, and if you're lucky, it will have hot water. But for an extended stay on a tight budget, you can't beat it.
There are abundant bargains, but if it's luxury you're looking for, you'll be sure to find it. Resplendent digs are widely available in every major Chinese city, throughout Japan, and into Southeast Asian cities like Bangkok and Hanoi, and even in agrarian Laos, if you visit the magnificent cities of Vientiane and Luang Prabang. And nothing says "tropical paradise" like southern Asia, with white sand beaches, warm water and palm trees.
Wherever you go, you'll be tempted by the many shops and bazaars that feature unique, hand-crafted items, often sold by the craftspeople themselves. You can visit the bustling Chatuchak Market in Bangkok for some of fascinating and bargain-priced gift items to bring back home, and when in Beijing, spend a day or two getting lost in the Golden Resources Shopping Mall, also known as the "Great Mall of China". And just about anywhere you go, you'll find rare antiques, beautiful jewelry and friendly faces.
The possibilities are endless, the adventure unimaginable, and you'll meet the friendliest people who will make your trip a memorable one. The vastness of the Asian continent presents opportunities for any type of vacation you want-but here are just a few ideas to get started:
This Southeast Asian kingdom's charm is well known throughout the world. The "land of smiles" is not just a slogan, and once you're there, you will know what that really means. You'll find exciting nightlife in cosmopolitan Bangkok, along with rich history and magnificent examples of architecture, mystical Buddhist temples, and majestic palaces. Outside of the big city, you can see rural life that has not changed in hundreds of years, or take a drive up to the northern region to visit the ethnic hilltribe communities. Along the coastal areas you'll find quaint resort towns and tropical island communities that will delight and inspire. And of course, the opportunities for shopping are endless. Bring an empty suitcase, because you'll be filling it up when you're there!
The Chinese Special Administrative Region of Macau, just a short boat ride from Hong Kong, is known as the "Las Vegas of the East," but in reality, it should be the other way around. Macau has some of the largest and most exciting casinos in the world, each one a study in glitzy architecture. The casinos in Macau go far beyond gaming, often incorporating world-class entertainment, excellent restaurants, and shopping. But Macau is not just about gambling. This historic former Portuguese territory features a romantic, European-style feel, and the rare combination of European and Chinese influence have combined to make some of the most sumptuous fusion food in the world.
This isolated country delivers a rare look into what Southeast Asia was like a hundred years ago. Because it is largely cut off from the West, many residents still shun traditional Western clothes and still adhere to the old ways. Western-style accommodations may be hard to come by in much of the country, but you will find comfortable hotels in the capital city of Yangon. Review the State Department travel advisories before traveling here.
China is immense, and the different regions of China are so incredibly different they might as well be different countries altogether. The sprawling, cosmopolitan cities of Shanghai and Beijing present a good introduction to the country with plenty of tourist opportunities, and your trip to China would of course not be complete without walking on the Great Wall. The wonders of the Forbidden City must not be missed. Moving to the south of China, the Yunnan province has a whole different character and spiritual vibe, and natural wonders to delight the senses.
From Bollywood to mystical Holy men, India has it all, from traditional to ultra-modern. India is one of the few places in the world where you can enjoy an evening in a trendy nightclub, and then spend the day wandering through ancient temples. It's eclectic, to say the least. Don't forget to go outside of the cities to enjoy the incredible wildlife and fascinating jungle trekking opportunities! And of course, the cuisine is an adventure in itself, with spicy curries and a vast array of tantalizing smells and tastes that will get your mouth watering.
There are hundreds of places to choose from, but one thing's for sure, Asia will delight and amaze you with the greatest wonders of the world at your disposal, new types of cuisine you've never tried before, and ancient cultures to explore.
